Successful Hearing Show
The Worcester Hearing Show took place on Friday 3rd of October at the Guildhall, Worcester. Over 100 people attended the event which will be held annually. Anyone who suspects they have a hearing loss, if you wear or have worn hearing aids, if you have any questions about your hearing health or if you have a family member who is dealing with hearing loss and you want to understand more to be able to help them, then this show is a ‘must-attend’ event.
Experts from leading manufacturers introduced the very latest hearing innovations with interactive demonstrations and presentations whilst our own audiologists were on hand to answer any questions in a relaxed atmosphere. Fitting the Lyric invisible hearing aid in Worcester
3 Min read
7th Apr 2015
Fitting The Invisible Hearing Aid
We have been fitting the Lyric hearing aid for some time now in Worcester. We have had really fantastic results and many happy customers. The Lyric is a different type of hearing aid, in fact, it is the only one of its type. It is placed by us, exceptionally close to your eardrum. The Lyric is a completely invisible solution because of its deep placement in the canal.
Truly Invisible Hearing Aids
It is also the only long wear 24/7 hearing aid device on the market. It is worn for up to three months, no battery changes, daily extraction or insertion, simply hassle free hearing. Because of this placement it is exceptionally important that a trained professional both places and extracts the device. Actually placing the device does not take long and there is little or no discomfort.
Although Lyric® is an exciting and unique hearing solution, like all hearing aids, it is not the right solution for everyone with hearing loss.
The Lyric is only appropriate for people with mild to moderately-severe hearing loss. Its use is also constrained by ear size and shape. There are also some medical contra indications to the use of the device. During the consultation we will assess your hearing problems, your ear size and shape, and your medical conditions to evaluate if Lyric is right for you. The very first step is to have a hearing test.
The Hearing Test
The first step if for us to do a thorough hearing test to identify your hearing loss and lifestyle needs. Our test is comprehensive and will involve a diagnostic test of all of the functions of your hearing system. The test involves procedures such as:
- Pure Tone Testing
- Speech Testing
- Tympanometry
- Acoustic Reflex Testing
These tests allow us a full appreciation of your hearing loss and its underlying cause. The tests will also allow us to judge if you are a viable candidate for the Lyric hearing aid. We will then move onto assess your ear canal and shape for seating of the Lyric hearing aid
Lyric Hearing Aid Assessment
We will inspect your ear canal using a special microscope, this is to see if your canal shape and health is okay for the Lyric. The Lyric will be in your ear canal for months at a time so we need to be confident in the health of your ear canal. If we are happy that you are suitable, we will then size your canal.
Sizing For Lyric
Using a special forceps and depth sizing tool we will measure the length of your canal. Once the length is measured and you are found suitable we then use different sizing tools to find the right size Lyric hearing aid for you. This is a simple exercise, we place the sizing tool into your canal and then we carefully inspect the canal with the microscope to assess the fit. Having found the right size we will then move on to the actual fitting.
Fitting The Lyric
Having found the right size for you, we program the Lyric via our system and then place it in your ear canal. We will quickly find the right position and this part of the procedure is over in moments. It is very much a new experience for people, most of our Patients adjust to the feel of the Lyric quickly. However, some people do need to come back so we can adjust the position of the device.
Initially what we do is to ask you to walk around town for a while, this gives you some time to experience the sound and the fit of the Lyric. You will then come back to the shop and we will undertake any adjustments in sound quality or positioning for you then and there.

Hearing aid features are many and diverse, what do they do?
6 Min read
7th Apr 2015
When you are considering purchasing any electronics, whether it be a TV or a laptop, you often look at and compare features. The way most people approach the purchase of hearing aids is no different. They will often try and compare the features. Hearing aids have many different features that deliver differing benefits to hearing aid users. However, they get harder to understand as you try to compare them across different manufacturers.
So many different names for features that in essence all try to do the same thing. Of course, that does not mean that all the features are the same, some do the things they should in a better manner. All modern hearing aids would have some mixture of high technology features designed to help you hear better. The level of those features and the overall benefit to you is dependent on the level of technology of the hearing aid and the manufacturer.
Audible indicators
Audible indicator tones are used by all manufacturers to inform you of the changes that you are making to the hearing aids. They are audible feedback to you to let you know which program is currently in operation, that the volume control has changed or that the battery level is low. The tones normally tend to be a beep or melody, however Widex use real speech to announce the programmes that you are on and whether the battery is low.
Automatic programme
Listening programmes are pre-set to work in different listening situations such as restaurants, they are pre-programmed into the hearing aid. This allows you to optimise the hearing aid settings for different listening conditions, for example speech in quiet, noise, TV and music. You can select each listening program by using a switch or push button on the hearing instrument or via a remote control. However, an automatic program selects the optimum instrument settings without you having to intervene. The hearing aids identify the sound environment, then they automatically switch to the appropriate settings. Differing manufacturers provide automatic program that recognise differing amounts of sound environments.
Binaural synchronisation
Binaural synchronisation is a feature that was introduced with the advent of wireless hearing aids. Originally, the feature ensured that the settings, such as volume level and programme, were synchronised across two hearing aids. This feature ensured that if you made a change on one hearing aid, It was automatically changed on the other. This meant that the two devices are always properly balanced. The featured has advanced much further than that now, in high technology levels, this feature allows the hearing aids to act as an integrated system using binaural compression.
Binaural Compression
This is a feature that has been more recently introduced, Widex introduced it in their top range hearing aids in 2009. Many other manufacturers have followed suit in more recent times. Binaural compression is achieved by using both hearing aids to analyse and understand the surrounding sound environment. They communicate to each other exactly what they are hearing. This information exchange allows the hearing aids to make decisions on what they present to you as a system.
This allows them to replicate the normal sound cues that we receive with normal hearing. People who use it report that the sound of these systems is the closest to natural they have ever experienced. We also believe that because the natural sound cues are preserved, it is easier for the brain decipher what it is hearing.
Compression channels
These are divided in a similar fashion to frequency bands which we will describe later. However, unlike frequency channels that are designed to split the frequencies of sounds into different areas for amplification, compression channels are divided into a number of channels that restricts the range of sounds that you are exposed to.
This allows us to tailor make the amplification for you, ensuring that soft sounds are audible and loud sounds are never intolerable. This feature is particularly useful for first-time hearing aid wearers who have become accustomed to a certain level of volume. This division of channels allows us to make frequency-specific adjustments independently in just that area of sound. Some hearing aids have more channels/bands than others.
Data logging
Data logging is a feature within hearing instruments which records information about the use of the hearing aids. This data is made available to us in order that we can review it for fine tuning purposes. Unitron have released a particularly powerful data logging tool with their new North platform. The data that is normally recorded includes: hours of use, types of listening environment encountered, listening programmes used and the volume control position. This information allows us to discuss how you are getting on and to identify any opportunities to make changes to the hearing aids that will be more beneficial to you.
Feedback cancellation
Feedback is the shrill whistle that hearing aids were once famous for, feedback can be due to a poor fitting of an ear set or in ear hearing aid. This allowed amplified sound to escape, which was re-processed by the hearing aid resulting in a screech. It is similar to the screech you will get from a speaker when a microphone is brought too close.
Feedback cancellation is a feature that was introduced in digital hearing aids to overcome this problem. The features have become exceptionally good at dealing with the problem. Most modern hearing aids will not whistle unless there is a large build up of wax in the ear canal. Even then, sometimes they will not whistle. The actual features differ in operation across manufacturers, however they all result in the feedback being cancelled.
Directional microphones
Directional microphones are the feature that has the single biggest impact on your ability to hear in noisy sound environments. In essence, hearing aid manufacturers use two microphones in a hearing aid that allows them to have two separate points of information about the sound environment. The information from both microphones is used by the computer brain of the hearing aid to separate what sound is coming from the rear and what sound is coming from the front.
This allows the hearing aid to present the sound to the user with a reduced level of sound coming from the rear and concentrate the sound coming from the front if that is what is needed. Directional microphones enable you to target the direction of hearing, as you require, from hearing all-round sound to being more focused on a single person or object. Modern directionality can allow you to focus the beam of hearing in any direction, for instance to your right, left or backwards when you are in a car. Allowing you to hear the driver, passenger or rear seat passengers.
Adaptive directional microphones
This is a feature within the computer brain that increases the power of directional microphones. The feature uses the microphones to detect the location of the strongest noise and adapt its sound pick-up to minimise that noise. If the noise source moves then the sound from the microphone system adapts to keep that noise reduced. Most modern adaptive systems can work in more than one frequency band allowing the reduction of several different noises at one time even if they are all moving at different positions around you.
Automatic directional microphones
Automatic directional microphones do everything we have discussed in the previous two paragraphs automatically. They just work, no input needed.
Frequency bands
Sound is split into frequencies, think of the singing scales for a good analogy. Hearing aids concentrate on the frequencies involved in speech. The frequency range of the hearing instrument is divided into a number of bands in which the amplification can be controlled to match your hearing loss. If you remember the old graphic equaliser features on music systems, frequency bands in hearing aids are used in a similar but more complex manner.
Each manufacturer is different, some call them bands and some call them channels. No matter what they are called, they allow us to custom tune the hearing to your needs. The more frequency bands that the aid has, the finer the customisation for you. It means that we can deliver crisper, clearer hearing that is designed for you and your hearing loss.
There is quite a bit of debate about how many bands matter, the opinion differs among manufacturers. For instance Widex believes that fifteen is the limit, that any more than fifteen brings no more benefit, however GN ReSound believe that 17 is the best. No matter, the more bands or channels that a hearing aid has the better.
Noise reduction
Noise reduction is designed to help you hear better in noisy situations, it attempts to reduce the perception of noise so you can understand speech better. It makes it more comfortable for you in noisy conditions, it automatically recognises the background noise, for example in traffic noise in the street, busy pub or restaurant, and then goes to work.
Speech enhancement
Speech enhancement is something that again has been around for several years. With advances in computer processor chips it has got better at what it does. Speech has a very different pattern to noise which allows the processor to identify it. This feature allows the processor in the hearing aid to identify those speech signals and enhance the presentation of them. In essence it analyses sound signals and, where most noisy, reduces background noise and maximises speech.
Transient noise reduction
This feature is a noise reduction system that identifies and suppresses sudden impact sounds, such as breaking glass, shutting doors and clanging dishes, without affecting speech clarity. It differs from normal noise reduction by the rate of attack, it acts quickly. It is known by many names across the different hearing aid manufacturers such as sound-smoothing, hammer noise protection and anti-shock. No matter what it is called, it allows the hearing aid to process sudden or loud noises in a more comfortable way for you, delivering a better more comfortable experience.
Wind noise reduction
Wind noise reduction is an electronic system that reduces the annoying sound of wind rushing over the microphones. The hearing aid detects windy conditions and adapts the hearing aid sound output automatically for maximum comfort. This feature is great for people who participate in outdoor activities, such as golf.

This improves speech clarity and also reduces the effect of wind noise.
Acoustic Phone
This programme is designed to make it easier to talk on the telephone. The hearing aid on the telephone side transmits the speech to both hearing aids simultaneously, which improves speech clarity whilst reducing the sound of distractions in the room.
Key Features
Stereo Zoom
This feature is designed to focus the hearing aids automatically on the clearest speech sound they can pick up. Ideal for noisy environments where there is background conversation.
Zoom Control
Rather than just focusing on sounds in front of you, this feature can focus on speech sounds to the side or behind you. This is ideal for situations where you cannot easily turn to face the speaker, such as when you are driving and trying to listen to directions from your passengers.
UltraZoom
Directional microphones allow you to pick up the sound from all around you giving you a wide range to hear sound. The ultrazoom feature narrows this range to focus on a small area where someone is speaking. This gives you better speech understanding and reduces the effect of background noise.
DuoPhone
This feature is designed to make it easier to talk on the telephone. The hearing aid on the telephone side transmits the speech to both hearing aids simultaneously, which improves speech clarity whilst reducing the sound of distractions in the room.
Flexcontrol and FlexVolume
The Flexcontrol and FlexVolume feature give the wearer more control over their hearing. It enables the wearer to fine tune their hearing aids for better hearing in different environments.
Echoblock
Listening in assembly halls or places of worship is often a problem for hearing aid wearers due to the sound echoing around the room. This feature recognises the sound echo and removes it, without distorting the other sounds around you.
Whistleblock
This feedback elimination feature recognises the feedback sound and removes it before you know it is there. As with the Echoblock feature, it can do this without sound distortion.
NoiseBlock
This feature recognises continuous background sounds, such as traffic noise through a window, the dishwasher or office photocopier. It can reduce the volume of this sound so that speech is clearer and easier to understand.
Windblock
Removes the sound of the wind when you are outside.
SoundRelax
Sudden loud sounds can be unpleasant or painful for those with hearing loss, particularly when it is amplified by your hearing aid. The SoundRelax feature can soften the impact of sudden loud sounds without distorting the other sounds around you.
Real Ear Sound
This feature allows the hearing aids to mimic the way the ear naturally listens. This, as well as the receiver in canal design, means that it is easier to determine the direction the sound is coming from.
SoundRecover
This feature takes the high frequency sounds which are outside your hearing range, such as children’s voices and high pitched sounds, and makes them easier to hear.
QuickSync
Changing the volume or setting on one hearing aid will automatically change the other hearing aid as well. This synchronisation makes sure the hearing aids are always working together.
Tinnitus Balance Noise Generator
This feature helps to relieve the symptoms of tinnitus by generating a pleasant sound.
Phonak has a range of accessories which are fully compatible with the Bolero range.
Connect & Communicate
Phonak Bolero V is compatible with the Phonak wireless communication portfolio. These accessory wireless devices deliver quality sound, ease of use and support you across many different situations that you face on a day to day basis.
Phonak Easycall
The Phonak EasyCall connects hearing aids wirelessly with any Bluetooth enabled cell phone. It binaurally streams the phone call directly to the hearing aids for maximum speech understanding.
Phonak Dect II
The Phonak DECT II is the ideal phone for use both at home or in a small office. The phone signal is streamed wirelessly to both hearing aids simultaneously. This provides unmatched sound quality and great understanding.
Phonak Conversation Set
The small and stylish Phonak ComPilot Air II Bluetooth streamer, combined with the RemoteMic, transmits a distant speaker’s voice directly to both hearing aids over a distance of up to 20 meters (66 ft).
Phonak Entertainment Set
TVLink II, combined with ComPilot II provides high quality stereo sound directly to both hearing aids when watching TV or listening to music. 24 hours continuous streaming time and 30 meters range.
I think that pretty much wraps up all there is to know about the new Phonak Bolero V90 Range of hearing aids, if you have any questions about the new range of hearing aids or hearing aids in general, why don’t you give us a call on 01905 617803 or book an appointment online.

This feature reduces the level of background noise without affecting the volume of speech around you, giving you better clarity when having conversations in noisy places. If you have problems in noise, this type of feature is ideal for you.
Wind Noise Reduction
This program recognises and reduces the sound of wind, making it easier to hear speech when you are outside. An ideal feature if you are active in the outdoors, take walks or like to play golf.
Spatial Sound Premium
Spatial Sound is based on a binaural wireless system. By preserving the natural characteristics of the signal from both ears simultaneously, this technology assists the brain in the process of organising, selecting and following sounds, resulting in easier access to speech in noise. This is the core of the system, it tries to ensure that sound is presented normally so the power of the brain’s natural abilities can be used.
Binural Synchronisation
Noise reduction and directionality are automatically aligned in both ears, creating consistent sound reception. This allows the most natural sound quality and ensures the hearing aids work as a pair.
BrainHearing Technology
This program uses Binaural Processing and Binaural Synchronisation to allow your hearing aids to communicate with each other and ensure they are always on the same program settings and volume. This also helps you to hear where sounds are coming from, giving you better spatial awareness. The telephone program sends the sound from the phone to both hearing aids at the same time, making calls easier. The Spatial Noise Management program compares the speech and noise volumes around you and is able to increase speech clarity. This gives you better understanding of speech in noise.
Soft Speech Booster
This program amplifies the harder to hear speech sounds at higher frequencies. Many people with high frequency hearing loss find it difficult to hear the beginning or end of words, and struggle with conversations. This program brings these high frequency sounds within hearing range.
YouMatic Premium
Designed for different listening situations, this program can contain 5 different profiles tailored to suit your needs, ideal for busy lifestyles.
FreeFocus Premium
This program controls the directional microphones and gives you five different modes for hearing sound in front of you, behind you, to the side or all around you. This is ideal for times when you cannot always turn to face the person speaking.
SpeechGuard E
This is designed for quieter environments and works to amplify speech sounds. It also adapts to your environment, ensuring listening comfort if background noise increases.
10 kHz Bandwidth
This gives a rich listening experience and great sound quality when listening to music.
Inium Feedback Shield
The feedback program removes the whistle or buzz of feedback before you know it’s there.
Tinnitus Sound Support
This program plays relaxing sounds to give relief from the whistle of tinnitus. The Tinnitus Sound App, used with Oticon’s ConnectLine Streamer Pro allows you to personalise your sound settings and also gives you some relaxation exercises.
VC Learning
These hearing aids are able to learn what your favourite settings are over time and apply them for you.
Adaptation Manager
New hearing aids can seem too loud, especially if you have been without good hearing for a while. This program allows you to get used to the noisy world gradually by slowly increasing the volume.
Wireless Connectivity
Helps to experience better connections with people, information and entertainment.
Phone communication – breaks down the barriers to phone communication. Incoming calls can be taken by simply pressing the dedicated phone button on the streamer, and the caller’s voice is streamed directly through the hearing instruments.
ConnectLine for life’s many opportunities
ConnectLine wireless accessories are the ideal complement to Oticon hearing aids, the devices empower you to participate more actively in practically all of the situations in life that you have difficulty with.
One complete wireless integrated system
ConnectLine is the wireless solution that offers the most connectivity abilities in one integrated system. Start with the application you find most useful for your needs. You can always add more applications at any time.
The New Streamer Pro
The Streamer Pro is the heart of ConnectLine giving you total control of program shifts and hearing aid volume. More than that it delivers control of all sources of audio-based information, entertainment and communication available to you.
TV – TV sound is wirelessly transmitted to the hearing instruments via the streamer providing high quality listening. The volume of the TV for the rest of the family remains at a level which suits them.
Wireless and Cable Connection – allows connection to various audio sources wirelessly or with a jack plug.
Personal Computer – connect directly to computers so that audio is transmitted directly through the hearing instruments for clear , easy online conversation and listening.
Lapel Microphone – allows you to enjoy clear and private one to one communication in challenging listening environments with a range of up to 15 metres. Teleloop – the T – cord built into the steamer allows easy access to Teleloop systems in theatres, lecture halls and places of worship.
Remote Control – the streamer can be used as a personal remote for adjusting volume and programs for those who have dexterity problems.

Hearing Aids, The Phonak Audeo V90 RIC Hearing Device Range
The Phonak Audeo V90
We believe that we are the best option for you for hearing care in Worcestershire, but we know you shouldn’t rely on what we say. So we asked our customers to tell you about us so you could make up your own mind. You can hear what they say on the video to the right.
The new hearing aid range from Phonak, the Audéo V, is a Receiver-In-Canal (RIC) hearing aid, making it a versatile but highly discreet option. RIC devices are very discreet because the piece that goes behind your ear is usually very small and the tube leading from it into your ear is almost invisible. They are very versatile because the receiver (the speaker part in the ear) can be changed for different levels of power, meaning that they can often work for nearly every hearing loss.
RICs aren’t for everyone
RIC devices aren’t suitable for everyone, if you have wet ears or really waxy ears it can cause the receiver to fail. So they aren’t necessarily suitable for everyone.
The Audeo V replaces the Audeo Q or Quest hearing aid family. The choice of hair and skin colours that Phonak have made available enhances the hearing aid’s discreetness if that is what you want. The fashion and fun colours make sure that you can show them off, if that is more your style. Phonak have ensured that they have something to suit every style. The hearing devices deliver fantastic support in even the most challenging listening situations, as you would expect from such a quality hearing aid manufacturer. they really are a complete package, great sound quality and a discreet, modern design. The Audeo V delivers:
- A great choice of styles at different price levels
- An option to help manage tinnitus
- And so small that it virtually disappears behind the ear
Hearing Aid Types & Technology
The Phonak Audeo V90 contains the highest level of technology in the Audeo range. It has 20 sound processing channels and a wide range of programmes and features to help you to hear in challenging environments. This RIC (Receiver In Canal) hearing aid is available in 11 different colour options.
The dust proof coating is also water repellent, ensuring that your hearing aid stays in great working order for longer. Phonak’s Binaural VoiceStream TechnologyTM allows one hearing aid to recognise speech sounds and transmit the speech to both hearing aids in real time. This technology works alongside various other features to give you the best hearing clarity in different challenging listening situations.
The four behind the ear models of Audeo are the V90-10 which takes a size 10 battery, the Audeo V90-312 which takes a size 312 battery. The Audeo V90-312T is the same again but with the addition of a telecoil receiver for a loop system. The Audeo V90-13 is the largest and fits a size 13 battery.

AutoSense is the management system of the hearing aids, it is an outstanding automatic feature that seamlessly alters your hearing aids to your changing listening environment. AutoSense OS accurately captures the precise listening environment you are in, changing when it needs to, to provide you with a comfortable, seamless listening experience throughout your day.
Speech in Loud Noise
The feature helps you focus in on the single voice you want to hear from a noisy crowd. When noise reaches a level that makes understanding one person in a crowd difficult, StereoZoom, Phonak’s excellent microphone management system is automatically activated, allowing you to focus on the voice you want to hear and ignore the noise you don’t.
Speech in 360°
Understand speech from any direction. The Speech in 360 feature automatically selects the direction of speech and sends this speech signal from one hearing aid to the other, improving clarity and speech intelligibility without the need for you to face the speaker.
Speech in Wind
Enjoy conversations even on a windy day. When wearing hearing aids wind noise can interfere with your speech understanding and listening comfort. The Speech in Wind feature enhances your ability to understand speech well, even when the wind is blowing.
